The Igumnov House was built in 1883-1893. In 1880 the architect Nikolay Pozdeyev was commissioned by the Igumnov family to extend the old two-storey Emirate-style villa. For 13 years the project made slow progress as the construction came under public criticism, the costs were exceeded and drove the young architect to suicide.

After the October Revolution, the nationalised building served various institutions until 1979, when it became the official residence of the French Embassy. In 2007 the extensive restoration of the building began.
