1. What is a resin floor?

A resin floor is a type of floor that is laid by pouring. Basically, it is finishing applied to a load-bearing floor. Resin floors can be constructed from concrete, or a plastic such as polyurethane or epoxy. Resin floors are always poured, so they are completely seamless and easy to clean. No wonder resin floors have gained enormous popularity in recent years.

2. What is the difference between an epoxy and polyurethane resin floor?

Polyurethane is generally more flexible and elastic compared to epoxy, which is much harder and more brittle. Polyurethane is therefore more resistant to scratches and damage, which makes its use in parking garages and bakeries perfect. Epoxy, on the other hand, is very durable and tough, and is therefore often used in heavy industry and the automotive sector.

3. What colours are resin floors available in?

Resin floors are available in various colours and in the most diverse colour combinations. The Remmers product range always responds to the wishes and needs of the customer. From standard colours to the most contemporary trend colours, the possibilities are endless. Request your free colour sheet today and let one of our flooring experts advise you.

4. Are resin floors expensive?

Resin flooring is considered cost-effective as it is durable and lasts many years whilst also offering lots of stunning design possibilities. They can be used in many domestic and commercial settings, making the cost of resin floor products very much dependent on its use and application.

5. Can I lay a resin floor over my existing floor?

Resin floors are specially designed to be placed over existing floors, and they adhere seamlessly to most surfaces. The surface must be dried and levelled before installation because resin solutions do not adhere well in damp places. Wood, natural stone, ceramic parquet, marmoleum, terrazzo, concrete, anhydrite, sand cement or cork are all suitable for a resin floor.

6. What is the life of a resin floor? How long do resin floors last?

The lifespan of a resin floor depends on a number of factors, such as: the level of stress on the floor, how well the floor is cleaned and maintained, how the floor is used from day to day, and the quality of the installation. Unlike traditional floor coverings, however, resin floors are generally easier to maintain thanks to their even and seamless nature.

7. Is a resin floor easy to clean?

Resin floors are very easy to clean and keep clean. For regular cleaning, a simple brush, mop or wipe will do the trick. However, there are also specific solvents and cleaning products on the market that are suitable for both epoxy and polyurethane resin floors. After cleaning, it is best to let the floor dry for a while or use a floor squeegee to speed up the process.

8. Is it possible to combine a resin floor with underfloor heating?

Yes! Resin is very effective with under floor heating. This is due to the thickness and favourably low heat resistance of resin. As a result, a resin floor rises in temperature much more effectively than, for example, tiles or wooden floors. This also makes resin flooring a cost effective option for homeowners.
In addition, polyurethane floors are flexible, which reduces the chance of cracking.

9. Can a resin floor discolour?

This depends on the type of resin floor used. For example, polyurethane and acrylic floors do not discolour. Epoxy resin floors, which consist of epoxy resins, are generally used in industrial areas and are sensitive to discolouration. Such resins always discolour over time. You can provide your epoxy floor with some limited protection by applying a UV coating.

10. Can I use a resin floor in a new-build home?

Yes. Resin floors are suitable for almost any type of floor covering. However, it is important that the substrate is flat and sufficiently dry at the time of laying. A resin floor can be just what you need to transform your new-build home into a sleek, modern space.

11. Are resin floors flexible and resilient?

Resin floors are known for their flexibility and are resistant to water and household cleaners. Depending on the customer’s wishes, a harder or softer system can be chosen. Do you prefer a softer look-and-feel or a system with a sound-absorbing effect? Such considerations are important and influence the structure and construction of a resin floor.

12. How thick is a resin floor?

The thickness of a resin floor varies according to the type of resin floor, but never exceeds 5 millimetres. Most polyurethane resin floors for private use are 2 to 3 millimetres thick. Because of its limited thickness it is very easy to apply a resin floor over an existing floor.

13. How long does it take to lay a resin floor?

Depending on the system and the substrate, it takes an average of 5 days for a Remmers resin floor to be laid and dry. This period includes the preparation of the substrate, the application of the scraper layer and the actual floor finish. In order to prolong the lifetime of the floor, however, it is recommended to wait before replacing heavy furniture.

14. Does the surface have to be level when the floor is laid?

Yes. It is very important that the subfloor is levelled before laying so the resin solution of the synthetic resin floor adheres well.

If the subfloor is not level, a levelling layer must be laid first. A professional floor installer will take care of this of course.

15. How can I prevent blistering?

Usually, blistering is the result of damage to or problems with the subfloor. For example, if there is water damage in the subfloor, the floor can be damaged in this way. Therefore, it is important to always work with a recognised and certified applicator. Based on a thorough preliminary investigation and moisture test, the applicator can intervene in an early stage and tackle any problems at the source. At Remmers, we only cooperate with parties that guarantee craftsmanship, quality and a thorough follow-up.
